The weaving technique used here is called "buna" - discontinuous supplementary weft, which means that the design has been imparted into the textile by adding colored threads during the weaving process.
The thread is a very fine hand spun indigenous cotton with natural dyes. The textile is in outstanding condition.

A center panel of a blanket Highlands of West Timor made using the "buna" technique where the motif is woven into the textile by adding colored threads during the weaving process. The weaving is wider in the center than the ends due to years of service as a blanket, which is worn instead of pants by the men.

Cotton warp ikat with discontinuous supplementary weft "Buna" detail and aniline dyes. The motif is a regional variation of the "kaif Naik" - a symbol of kinship and power based on Indian Patola cloths that were circulated throughout the archipelago by Indian traders in historical times.
