There is only one small district where the tradition of had painted batik on a hand spun cotton field survived into the 20th Century, the villages surrounding the ancient port of Tuban on the North East Coast of Java.

The thread is a very fine hand spun indigenous cotton with natural dyes.  The textile is in outstanding condition.

A center panel of a blanket Highlands of West Timor made using the "buna" technique where the motif is woven into the textile by adding colored threads during the weaving process.  The weaving is wider in the center than the ends due to years of service as a blanket, which is worn instead of pants by the men.

Cotton warp ikat with discontinuous supplementary weft "Buna" detail and aniline dyes. The motif is a regional variation of the "kaif Naik" - a symbol of kinship and power based on Indian Patola cloths that were circulated throughout the archipelago by Indian traders in historical times.
