Balinese Carving in Tauga nut & Mammoth Ivory

Tauga nut comes from the phytelephas macrocarpa palm. Commonly traded as vegetable ivory, corozo or palm ivory as the warm color and hardness of the nut give it an ivory -like appearance. The nuts are indigenous to South America and imported to Bali where they are carved with dental tools.

Mammoth Ivory is a byproduct of gold placer mining in the Yukon and Alaska. The material has been imported to Bali where it is carved using dental tools. Mammoth ivory can be carved with greater detail than tauga nut or bone. It also has a subtle grain that runs through it.
